ABSTRACT:
The strategy of the geological assessment for long and deep tunnels differs significantly from urban works or shallow tunnels. The geological field mapping plays an important role and site investigations are comprehensive civil works with deep boreholes and exploration tunnels. The geological assessment lasts over years and is subject to seasonal obstacles like snow cover and avalange risks. In the presentation, three projects (Semmering Base Tunnel and Koralmtunnel in Austria and Agua Negra Tunnel in Argentina and Chile) will be described briefly with the geological and strategic challenges and their accomplishment.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Since 2005, Dr. Höfer-Öllinger is Managing Director at GEOCONSULT ZT GmbH and Head of the Geological Department. Dr. Höfer-Öllinger graduated as Magister rer. nat. (equ. MSc) 2001 from University of Salzburg (Austria), in Geology specializing in hydrogeology and Quaternary geology. In 2002, after working for three years as freelance geologist at different consultancy firms, he started with GEOCONSULT. He is academic NATM-Engineer (2011, Mining University of Leoben, Austria) and achieved his Dr. rer. nat. (equ. PhD) 2017 at Freie Universität Berlin (Germany).
Dr. Höfer-Öllinger was involved in the geological investigations and accompaniment of major underground structures in a great number of projects, and with 20 years of experience, these projects cover a large variety such as subways, railways, roads, power plants, underground storage schemes and caverns.
Dr. Höfer-Öllinger was involved in the European railway base tunnels (Brenner Base Tunnel, Semmering Base Tunnel, Koralmtunnel) and in the development of several underground works for motorways and hydroelectric power plants. Outside of Europe Dr. Höfer-Öllinger worked in Central and South America (El Salvador, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia and Chile), Near East (Israel) and Asia (Georgia, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan, Kyrgyz Republic).
Dr. Höfer-Öllinger is Chartered Engineer at the Austrian Chamber of Architects and Engineers, and performs different roles at the International Tunnel Association (ITA) and the Austrian Society of Geotechnics (OGG).
