About Us

The Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Geology (SRMEG) can trace its origin to an interest group formed in 1998 under the Tunnelling and Underground Society Singapore (TUCSS). It serves as the Singapore National Group for both the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). Prof Jian ZHAO served as the first President of the Singapore National Group until 2002 when Dr Zhou Yingxin took over. The Society was officially registered on 23 July 2006 and gazetted on 26 July 2006. With the formation of SRMEG, TUCSS decided to transfer affiliations to the ISRM and IAEG to the Society. Members of the Society are automatically members of the ISRM and IAEG.

Objectives

  1. to promote technical and professional development of members through meetings, seminars and other forms of communication.
  2. to achieve closer personal acquaintance and spirit of co-operation among members.
  3. to interact with other professional organisations in matters of common interest.
  4. to promote the application of research and technologies to practices related to rock mechanics, rock engineering, and engineering geology, and to advance the standards of rock engineering and engineering geology practice.

Affiliations

The SRMEG is affiliated to and acts as the National Group for the International Society for Rock Mechanics (ISRM) and the International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment (IAEG). Member of the society are automatically members of the ISRM and IAEG.

Main Activities

The Society frequently organises professional development courses related to the field of rock mechanics and engineering geology, as well as conferences and networking activities for its members. In the year 2014, SRMEG organised a short course on Rock Mechanics and Empirical Methods in Rock Engineering, conducted by renowned developer of the Q-system, Dr. Nick Barton. A seminar on Eurocode 7 was also well attended, and many more as can be viewed on the Calendar of Events page.

In November 2012, SRMEG organised the 13th World Conference of Associated research Centers for the Urban Underground Space (ACUUS 2012 Singapore), with the theme “Underground Space Development – Opportunities and Challenges”. The Society has also co-organised the ISRM 2011 International Congress in Beijing with CSRME, and the 4th Asian Rock Mechanics Symposium. The Society also co-organised the following workshops at ARMS: Workshop on Rock Dynamics, jointly organised by SRMEG and the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering; Workshop on Underground Storage Facilities: jointly organised by the Korean Society for Rock Mechanics and SRMEG.

Members of the SREMG have also been actively involved in a major effort to update the Singapore Geology (first published in 1976) led by the Defence Science & Technology Agency in collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University and the Building Control Authority of Singapore.

Memberships

The society currently has about 100 members. The following three types of memberships are available:

  1. Ordinary members;
  2. Student members; and
  3. Corporate members.

Prof. ZHAO Jian of Monash University (Melbourne, Australia), Dr. SHI Gen-Hua of DDA Company, USA and Prof. ZHAO Zhiye of Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) are Honorary Members of the Society.

The society welcomes all individuals and corporations with an interest in rock mechanics and engineering geology to join the society.
