The 10th Asian Rock Mechanics Symposium (ARMS 10) was held in Singapore on 29 October to 3 November 2018 at Suntec Singapore Convention & Exhibition Centre. The ARMS 10 was jointly organised by the ISRM national group for Singapore, Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering Geology Singapore (SRMEG), and Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics & Engineering (CSRME), with kind support by the ISRM, Singapore Exhibition & Convention Bureau, and Ministry of National Development (MND) Singapore. The ARMS 10 attracted 427 participants from 40 countries , with 90% of the participants from outside of Singapore.
The ARMS 10 involved 20 featured presentations, including 7 keynotes, 1 Rocha Medal lecture, 3 Young Research Plenary lectures, 1 ISRM Franklin Lecture, and 8 presentations in the Early Career Forum. The Details of the 7 keynotes are as follows:
1. Key Complex Process Couplings and Challenges in the Effective Recovery of Deep Geothermal Energy. Prof Derek Elsworth, Pennsylvania State University, USA
2. Eurocode 7: genesis, development and implications for rock engineering. Prof John HARRISON, University of Toronto, Canada
3. Mining Rock Mechanics in China. Prof He Manchao, China University of Mining and Technology, Beijing, China
4. The Roles of Higher-Frequency Waves in "Unexpected" Problems of Earthquakes. Prof
Koji UENISHI, University of Tokyo, Japan
5. Rock Fracturing by Low Power Microwave Treatments – Observation, Mechanism and Application. Prof Zhao Jian, Monash University, Australia
6. Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering in Singapore. Prof Zhao Zhiye, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
7. Failure of Anisotropic Rocks such as Shales, and Implications for Borehole Stability. Prof Robert Zimmerman. Imperial College London, UK
