Engineering Geology Works in Singapore Infrastructure Projects

In this presentation, engineering geology works in underground rock excavation project and rock slope stability assessment will be discussed. In underground excavation project, the study of subsurface geology of the planned area, in-situ stress measurement, Geological Strength Index (GSI) determination on excavated rock faces, stability analysis of geology structure-controlled gallery profile and basic principles for storing oil and gas in unlined rock caverns will be presented. The slope stability of an abandoned quarry will be assessed by Q-slope method proposed by Barton and Bar (2015).
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr Kar Winn is currently working as a Sessional Lecturer with Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education (NAIHE) and a freelance consultant. He is currently the President of Myanmar Geologists Society Singapore and Committee Member of Society of Rock Mechanics and Engineering Geology (Singapore). He received his B.Sc. (Geology) from Rangoon Arts & Science University, Myanmar in 1976, M.Sc. (Geotechnical Engineering), M.Sc. (International Construction Management) and Ph.D. from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore in 1999, 2005 and 2019 respectively. In Myanmar, he worked as an Exploration Geologist with Myanmar Oil Corporation and Myanmar Shell B.V before moving to Singapore in 1993. He works here in engineering geology, geotechnical engineering and rock mechanics fields involving with various projects such as geotechnical site investigation & instrumentation, underground rock cavern excavation, cut & cover excavation & tunnelling works and rock slope stability analysis etc.
